Acing your job interview
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the way we recruit and how you find work. Gone are the days (for now, at least) of coming into branch for your interview. Now we’ll conduct it virtually; meeting and assessing your suitability, often for the first time, via video call.
But this doesn’t mean you should treat it any differently than if it was face-to-face. Here are a few simple steps you can take to ensure your video interview goes as smoothly as possible.
Before your interview starts, make sure you have all the necessary documentation to hand and complete any online registrations. Not only will this speed up the application process, but you’ll come across as well-organised (first impressions count!). If you’re unsure about what you need just get in touch with your recruiter via email or phone beforehand, they’ll be able to help.
It’s also useful to have a copy of your CV to hand so you can talk about your previous work and qualifications confidently, as well as a pen and paper to write down any important information.
Test your technology
Trial your audio and camera to avoid running into problems when your interview is in full swing. You could practice this with a friend the day before so you’re familiar with setting up and confident that you’re prepared.
On the day, switch off any sound notifications (emails, texts, social media alerts, etc) to avoid it interfering, and keep your battery charger close-by in case your device runs out of juice.
Choose a suitable place
If possible, pick a place in your house that’s well lit, has little distraction and minimal noise. This’ll help you focus and prevent you from losing your train of thought. Let’s face it – it’s easily done at home.
Don’t be put off by the fact you’re talking to a camera, just relax and be yourself. Conducting video interviews is new to us as well, we’re all in the same boat! Don't be afraid to ask us questions either, we want to find you work that fits what you’re looking for so asking questions will really help us achieve this.
Get in touch with your local team to discuss current work opportunities and arrange your video interview.
